How to write a good prompt

A prompt is the request you make to the AI. The answer is only as good as the request. Improving this changes everything.

A prompt is simply what you type to the AI: the question or the instruction. Most people think the AI is weak when, in truth, they gave a vague request. Whoever improves the request improves the answer right away, without switching tools.

Vague request, vague answer. A clear request, with context and format, gives you an answer ready to use.

The four pillars of a good prompt

ContextSay who you are and who the result is for. "I own a finishing company; the client is a developer who is late on payment."
RoleAsk the AI to take on a persona. "Act as a cost estimator with 15 years of experience." That changes the level of the answer.
FormatSay how you want the output: email, list, table, tone (formal or direct) and length. Most requests fail because the person did not define what a good result looks like.
ExampleIf you can, show a model of what you want. One example is worth more than ten explanations.

A simple structure that works in any AI

Write the prompt in labeled blocks. The AI responds better this way than to a block of running text:

BlockWhat to put
CONTEXTWho you are and the situation.
TASKWhat you want the AI to do.
FORMATHow you want the answer: type, tone and length.

Two more tips few people use

Be specific and conciseDetail what matters, but do not write a wall of text. Put the essentials at the start and the end of the request, never only in the middle.
IterateThe first answer is a draft. Adjust it: "shorter", "less formal", "in English", "add the deadline". Going back and forth with the AI is normal.

There is no magic prompt. There is a clear request. The more you say who you are, what you want and how you want it, the more the AI delivers something ready to use. In the next article, ready-made prompts for the contractor day to day.
